Alkmaar is more than 750 years old, and is situated in the middle of polders where dairy cattle graze.
The city is famous for its cheese market.
This market is still held for tourist between the months of April through October.
The downtown area has many stores, restaurants, canals, and beautiful restored homes with old facades.
You can find there: the cheese museum, the beer museum, the stove museum, and the Stedelijk Museum.
A visit to the West Friesche Museum in Spanbroek is worth the trip.
